In a surprising move, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced it will no longer require Paralympians to cover tattoos of the Olympic rings during competition. The decision comes just days before the start of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Previously, athletes with tattoos featuring the Olympic rings faced the risk of severe penalties, including disqualification, if they did not cover these tattoos due to the stringent tattoo rule. This rule was part of the IPC’s efforts to maintain a clear distinction between the Paralympic and Olympic movements.

Craig Spence, IPC’s chief brand and communications officer, confirmed the change in a brief statement. “Athletes with such tattoos do not need to cover them up,” Spence said in an email on Friday. The IPC did not provide further details or an explanation for the reversal of the tattoo rule.

The removal of the tattoo coverage requirement could signify a broader shift in the IPC’s approach to inclusivity and the integration of Paralympic and Olympic values. The change aligns with a growing recognition of the shared heritage between the two movements and a commitment to respecting athletes’ personal expressions.

What are the Paralympics ?

The Paralympic Games are a major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities. Held every four years, the Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee and take place shortly after the Olympic Games, in the same host city. The Paralympics feature a range of sports, adapted to various types of physical disabilities, and celebrate the extraordinary achievements and resilience of athletes from around the world.

As the 2024 Paralympic Games are set to begin, the new policy will allow athletes to focus entirely on their performances and achievements. The Games, taking place in Paris from August 31 to September 15, will showcase the exceptional talents and determination of Paralympians.

The IPC’s decision to lift the tattoo rule is expected to have a significant impact on the athletes, removing an additional layer of stress and allowing them to compete with greater ease. The focus now shifts to celebrating the athletes’ remarkable abilities and their contributions to the global sports community.
